for several months how do I find a place to live? And how much do apartments cost-in bigger cities and smaller towns? Is it possible to find short term rentals (for months, not a full year). I don't know what the system is like there.

Depends where you're going to live. North of Italy is usually more expensive than the South. Then, like in USA, you've to see how big is the apartement, where is it, etc. I'm living in Torino with 2 other people in an apartment good for 3 people (maybe even 4) not too far from the city center and we pay 500€... just an example. But there are also many sites where you can search... here an example:

I lived in Sicily for 5 years. It's like anywhere else. It depends on how much money you have to spend. If your thinking of going on the cheap, stay home. I was just looking at some websites that have villas for short term rental. Those were in the $5-10,000 USD range per month. If you're looking for extremely cheap, be careful as some places are extremely old and are not fit to sleep in. Try googling " Sleep Italy" , it will lead you to many other websites. Good luck.

Have some local folk help you, mostly. Big Cityes and small towns have very different rental rates. Let's say in my experience, the same apartment may cost €400/month in Trieste and €1000/month in Rome. Usually if you're not "referred" by some local folk you can't get good apartments for rent, you get just those the owner don't care a lot to be ruined by you. there are places to rent full furnitured and compl. empty!! -i meant really empty, no kitchen!! than u have to pay 3 months ahead like other people sad all ready, go to the agencies and make them show u the apartments first!! i bet u are going to love the Italian houses!!

it really depends on the city, some cities can be really expensive, like rome, or places to rent can be very hard to find, this also according to the city. i suggest you post a more specific question including city, if it has to be near the center, how big does it have to be, and the period of time (which months)
