Italy is a great place to live. Wonderful people, beautiful art, architecture and scenery, and great food. There are historic sites including Roman and Etruscan, castles, and more modern sites. It's very easy to get around the country using the trains. There's always something going on somewhere. This week, the city fair has been running in the town where I live. Next weekend is the Palio in Ferrara and there are many other possibilities. Events here tend to be family oriented. However, the economy is not good right now. Unemployment is high. It is very difficult for a non-European to move here under normal circumstances and moreso now. European regulations give citizens of the EU the right to live and work freely here. Others need a visa that allows them to live and work. Employers have to advertise jobs and demonstrate that there are no viable candidates from the EU before they can get a work permit for a foreign worker. That pretty much limits jobs for foreigners to things that require special education, skills and/or experience. When I got my visa several years ago, it took 8 months even though the economy was much better and my company was just transferring my job from an office in the US to an office here. Many recent university graduates have not found work or are in jobs like cashier in the local groceries. That said, perhaps the situation will relax as the economy recovers sometime in the future. Learning the language is an important step if you eventually want to work here. The cost of living here is somewhat higher than in Colorado. Especially since I have to file tax returns on my world-wide income both here and in the US every year. This is the visa site for Italy: http://www.esteri.it/visti/home_eng.asp and expat websies are useful to get an idea of what life is like and how to get around in a new country: http://www.expatsinitaly.com/

In the US there are not enough hours in the day. In Italy there are.

I'm Italian and have always lived in Italy (central region, Adriatic cost). PRICES Italy, from the introduction of Europe, has became pretty expensive, inhabitants are many and space not so much, so houses cost a lot, historical centres of big cities like Rome, Milan and Florence are probably some of the most expensive places in earth. But you can find also apartments or small houses in the countryside, especially in my region (Abruzzo) people is these years buying the old houses, now in ruin and for this reason very chip, and restructure them, obtaining big villas in the mediterranean countriside. For this reason I suggest you to choice this option. MORALITY: Italy is a catholic State, catholicism is in general very liberal. Anyway Italy has a laic costitution, every religion can be practised without problems. Italians are becoming ever more and more laic and open-minded people, but for them family, work and friends still are very important, family being the most important of these three (though the rant of divorces is growing). I think that under this profile, Ireland is the most similar country. PEOPLE: There still are differences between North and South, where in North people is tendencially more open-minded and a bit colder (more mittle-europeans), in the "deep" South more careful about family and values and more friendly (more mediterranean). Anyway many times these seem to be only prejudges. Central regions are a mix, you can find both. Italians are very friendly and talkative and many of them are very interested in foreigns, especially Americans and the other Europeans. Some ethnicities, on the contrary, are victims of many prejudges, especially muslims (don't care where they are from), Albanians and Romanians. Italians ethnically descend from many ethnicities: Latin-Italics, Greeks, Gotes, Turkeys, Normans, Frenchs and Spaniards, so they can differ very much in look and in character. In general like fashion - but not all - and are very proud people. ECONOMY: The crisis is arrived here too, but despite this, Italy has the 7th biggest economy in the world. The main sectors are fashion, tourism and cars. Restoration is also important. We don't have many natural sources and we have to import many of them. We are trying to develop even more the tourism and the factories. We have many big factories, most concentrated in the so called "Northern Triangul": that are that connects Turin, Milan and Venice. In this space there is one of the richest and most prosperous area of the world. The most famous brand are Ferrari, Fiat, Benetton, Cavalli, Armani, Barilla and others... PLACES: Italy is all beautiful , but there are some "pearls" famous in all the world for their beauties. This includes the Tuscan countryside, Venice, Emeraud Cost, Rome, the Alps, Florence and others... If you like discos and nightlife, Rimini and Riccione are full of them and usually they attract many German tourist. American tourists/residents concentrate most of all in Tuscany and Puglia. Hope to have been useful. Ciao ciao and enjoy Italy.
