Safe neighborhood 2. Lively, but not too congested 3. does not have to be By the water 4. Shops and cafes 5. Up and coming neighborhood is fine 6. Some land, not much 7. Not too pricey 8. Good investment optional, but not necessary Any suggestions will be very appreciated. Thank you

These criteria are still insufficient...Italy is not as big as the US, but there are still TOO MANY destinations that fit these request. It would be useful to know: Are you planning to work in Italy ? What kind of work activity? Are you planning to stay all year round or only for a few months each year? By "lively" do you mean a city with lots of theatres, museums, cultural life or rather bars, restaurants and nightlife? Would you prefer an area where other foreigners are common or you don't care? If you prefer not to post to many personal details, write me and I'll try to give you some advice privately.

It depends on many factors including the climate you prefer, whether you like cities or towns and lots more. You are always welcome to contact me as I made the move over a decade ago and am always willing to help.

Presumably either you or your husband have a job lined up in Italy, with an employer who will organise a work visa, or you have looked into the process of getting a long-stay visa, or you have a passport from an EU country? If not, you will only be able to stay in Italy for 90 days out of every 180 days with a US passport. This might impact on what you buy and where.

I would suggest the neighbourhood of Lucca. It is a small and pretty lively town not far from the sea. It is in Tuscany and it has a sunny climate.

Well, almost anywhere in Italy could fit your criteria except the "not too pricey" Since the Euro took over and the dollar plummeted, it's expensive to be in Europe with American money. Have you ever even been to Italy? I mean, I would suggest that you go and do some exploring. The best way to find what is right for you is to discover it. One person's perfume is another's poison.

modena(beautiful, non touristic, high class as italy gets, massarati headquarters is there, north-central italy, and suprizingly non expensive. thats bcz it is really not a party town, but it is a great place to live and if you google it, i think you might agree. also if your thinking about going more south, try reggio calabria, its super cheap, kikinda poor, but really beautiful(some parts), but all in all it is nice too.
