I'm going to live in Italy for a year to study. Can I learn the language from just a book and a CD?
I'm going next summer, so only a year to learn it. Will I be able to from just a book and the cd that comes with it or do I need to take a few courses? I mean, I don't expect to speak it perfectly but I do want to know enough to get around. I'll be living in Rome

I'm sure that with some determination and a lot of hard work, you can teach yourself just about anything, including basic conversational Italian. If you can afford it, I've heard great things about the Rosetta Stone software and they are able to apparently teach you very quickly. Love as always, Sebastian

Good luck to you...I studied German for 4 years and then moved there...yeah; my German was just that...merely enough to get me around: if that! If you are going to read and listen to it; you need to actually practice it to make it stick. Maybe look for Italian Americans in your area? And a class wouldnt help so you could find someone to talk with!

Italian is very easy to learn if you know at least some Spanish, the language's structure is very similar

teach it yourself...probably the cd and book will work...I'm currently teaching myself German and not doing bad...Just stick to it

yes and no. The book and cd will teach you functional language..... how to get to the train station, where is the bathroom, how much is this purple sweater... but it can't teach you how to communicate. If you can, find a family to take you in. preferably one that speaks little to no english and has young children. If you do this, you will come back with italian as a second language.

No you have to submerge your self into it. Trust me I speak Italian and have lived there for several years. You might get a few words but its al about the verbs and grammer. Where in Italy?

Speaking from experience, rosetta stone software is the best way to learn a language at home. However, the only way to truly learn communication is another language is experience. Get a tutor, or find a native speaker and talk to them. This is the best way to learn any language.
