Most Italians on the peninsula are forced to live along both coasts because the interior is occupied by the Apennines Mts. Northern Italy has the Alps to contend with. Italy's climate is highly diverse ranging from a Mediterranean climate to the south and a Continental climate to the north. They also have several active volcanoes in Italy: Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe; Vulcano; Stromboli; and Vesuvius.
