I'm American and live in Italy. My 2-year old son is Italian, can he get us

I'm American and live in Italy. My 2-year old son is Italian, can he get us ?citizenship?
I was born in the US and now I live in Italy with my husband and son. I have both US and Italian citizenship. My son is 2, can he get my US citizenship? I know that my little boy is young and we are very happy now in Italy but I'd like to know that one day if he liked it he could visit or live in my homecountry. My secret dream is to go back to the States one day so I'd like to give my son this opportunity like my special gift. Thanks.

I believe so go to the US consulate and fill out a Report of Birth Abroad.

You'd have to register your child's birth with the US embassy in Rome or one of the consulates, like Milan or Naples. As long as you lived in the US for at least 5 years altogether including 2 years after the age of 14, your son is an American. But, you have to register him for a Consular Report of Birth Abroad or CRBA to have it officially recognized. edit: The residency requirements changed some time ago. You can check out for yourself the precise requirements now at travel.state.gov and you can get the embassy and consulate websites at usembassy.state.gov.

If you lived in the US for 10 years, 5 years after 14, your son was born a US citizen. Basically, if you lived in the US till 19, you're good. Contact the US embassy and get the list of requirements needed to register your son.

The US State Department's website has the information you want. See below.
