I'll be in Rome on a fellowship for a year. My income is very fixed. How should I find housing, get insurance, apply for a visa, shop for groceries... In other words: what experience or knowledge do you have that will help me live abroad in Italy for a year? Any insight, suggestion or warning is welcome!

You asked very pertinent questions that I don't have an answer to. I would suggest knowing Italian, liking Italian food and not getting upset when you have your backside pinched.

wow! That's terrific. I will add what I know, but I'm sure others will have more info for you. First, your program coordinator is going to have the practical info for you. S/He will be able to tell you about visas, passports, insurance, lodging, and the like. As to groceries, I would suggest an intensive internet search of the area(s) you'll be in. My daughter is going to Europe for 13 days next summer and we started with just googling the cities she'll be in. We also googled some of the cultural aspects, things like local slang and local food. Next we hit the city library for background on the cities. Italy is a unique place, and not always a comfortable place for American women. I would talk specifically to American women who have visited and/or lived in Italy. Your college is a great place to find those, and also the internet. I would suggest, just as a practical piece of advice, get a solid grasp on the local lingo and the money. Those two things will take a lot of time to master and you could use that time better there than figuring all that out. So master those things while you're still here. Good luck and I hope you have a terrific year!
