You can use your American number while traveling in Italy, but you wouldn't want to do that long term because of expense. It's far less costly to get service in Italy for general use there. Some phones are loosely termed 'World Phones' which means they are capable of operating in most regions of the world. That can take care of the phone compatibility but the service provider is the important part of this issue and should be handled as I suggested.

While it **is** possible to use a U.S.-based cell phone in Europe, it all will depend on two things: 1.) That your cell phone is compatible with the European cell system. 2.) You don't mind paying an arm and a leg for the roaming charges you'll incur. So if you're going to be in Italy for an extended period, it is far cheaper for you (because you're the only one who will be paying through the nose) to switch to a European carrier.
