Where to live for one month in Italy

Where to live for one month in Italy?
I am going to live in Italy for the month of August 2011. I'd like the place to be less tourist like and more "open". Cost needs to be low. I would like it to be safe, have many vineyards, and hopefully plenty of things to do. I'll be traveling to all the major cities as well. Thanks!

Then south is for you. It's much cheaper, people are more friendly, easy going and relaxed (though, more irresponsible ). Lecce is beautiful cultural city in south, capital of Apuglia, city of youth . And, unlike most of the south Italy (such as Naples, Sicily,...) is pretty safe. But, people in south Italy don't speak English as much as people from the North do.

As the other answer says, the south is cheaper, but if you also want to travel to "all the major cities", you want something in central Italy or a well connected place in north to minimize travel times and cost. Bologna is about as far north as I would consider. It's not so touristic as some of the other large cities, but is a crossroad of the train system and has the #3 airport here. You could also consider some of the small towns along the train line near Florence. Cost is not going to be low in an absolute sense in August no mattr where you go - it's the peak of the tourist season here. However, a point to keep in mind is that August is also the holiday period in Italy. In the smaller, less touristic areas a lot of the businesses close during the month. Two of the hotels and several restaurants in the town where I live close in August. The train is a good way to travel here. I've been to Sicily - Oliveri for two months and it was my best vacations I ever had. You can find the flat there for about 200-500Eur/month and there are lots of travel destinations for the whole month. But I was there in May and August would be really HOT. But avoid cities like Messina or Catania, there is nothing to see. However Palermo is my favourite one! But be careful!!! :) Check this for Sicilian travel tips: http://www.best-of-european-union.eu/tag/sicily/ Or tips for other Italian destinations: http://www.best-of-european-union.eu/category/italy/
