in springs Delta, Continental have good bargains on airfares from Dallas, Atlanta, because is low season, better to purchase tickets around february, or one month early because you may save about 50% on a regular airfare by doing all using internet and purchasing e-tickets- Once in Rome get a good Hotel a 3 stars center city so you may go around easy from place to place and visits the best the city offer, from Rome you may purchase ready trips to go in Pompei, Island of Capri, Naples and Amalfi, or Florence, Assisi, just make a reservetion from the desk of your Hotel, it is very easy, the Bus come early in the morning to pick you up and then you go to Pompei and stay all day with a tour guide, interpreter, the cost about 100 $ but you have an organization that is very well runned and you are able to see more if you have a guide then if you do all this by yourself--- If you wanto to go to see Capri please go, you will never forget, you are able to choose once at the Hotel, many offers, many prices, just keep Rome as base and then go around taking daily trip where you want. I do same thing alone or with friends every year, the Bus is very confy and I meet nice tourists from all over the world. With 6000$ yoy may get about 4000 euro, so about 1700 euro for ticket, 800 for Hotels 800 for 3 trips, some 500 for pocket money, souvenirs, post cards, stamps, ice creams, + meals, tickets for Museums, + water + tips, train back to airport about 18 euro --- ciao - buon viaggio

$6K is more than enough, except if you're going during Spring Break which is at the top of the tourist season. You need to remember that although most people in the US think of Spring Break as vacation time, in most other countries where Catholicism is dominant, like in Italy, spring break is actually Holy Week. Rome will particularly be amazingly crowded and expensive because of all the religious devotees making their pilgrimages to the Vatican. I would suggest you purchase a tour of Italy which will include your time frame and budget. Try Cosmos.com

Whether $6K is enough for your trip or not depends on how long you plan to stay and exactly when your spring break occurs. If it coincides with Easter (+/- a week), then prices will likely be higher and there will be more tourists. It also depends on what happens with airfares between now and next year. However, that should be plenty for a very good trip. You can find current airfares at sites like: http://www.expedia.com/default.asp or http://www.kayak.com/ The site I use for hotels here in Italy when I go out exploring is: http://www.venere.com/hotels/italy/ . You can pick a specific area in the city and sort by price. Generally, I pay around 100 to 150 euro a night for a room, but there are cheaper places and I tend to go for festivals when prices are higher. To get from Rome to Pompeii, take the train from Roma Termini station to Naples Centrale (shhedules/prices: http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/homepage_en.html) . When you get there follow the signs for the Circumvesuviana trains. There's a trip planner for Circumvesuviana trains here: http://www.vesuviana.it/web/en . You want to go to the Pompei - Scavi Villa Misteri stop; it's another 36 minute ride that costs 2.40 euro from Naples. The entrance to the ruins is across the street. You might find this site useful for information on hotels and transportation in Rome: http://www.rometoolkit.com/ I usually count on 25 to 50 euro for a meal, but you can certainly eat well for less than that. A pizza is around 8 to 13 euro. You can get a panino or pizza by the slice for 4 to 6 euro. For restaurants, it will generally be cheaper if you're not in the immediate vicinity of the major tourist attractions, but you don't have to go far. Restaurants post menus, so you can check choices and prices while you're out sightseeing to find something suitable.

if you come in march prices are lower than the summer. find a hotel on www.venere.com, then you can move with buses and trains. eating will cost you about 7 or 10 euros per meal, then i'll add 10euros for shopping!
