I lived in southern Italy (near Brindisi) years ago and enjoyed it. The people were friendly. Little things took getting used to; for example, windows didn't have screens, none of the houses in the village had yards, and our stove ran off something called a "bombola" that we had to take in to get filled. Gorgeous countryside. And the language is easy to pick up.

it is a wonderful place to live in many ways, a lot easier if you speak the language obviously. one thing that is frustrating is the bureaucracy.... it is very hard sometimes to get simple things done when dealing with government departments - eg. just finding out how to go about getting something from the government (eg health care) can be very difficult, easier if you know a local person who can advise you. the people working in govt departments can be very unhelpful and so it can get frustrating. other than that, it is a great country, with amazing sights, food etc etc.... once you are living there, you will find the people friendly, especially in smaller towns.

I lived in Italy for a year. I loved it! It's got quite a unique culture and a huge variation from north to south. They can be quite unorganised at times... if you want a general idea, have a look at this hilarious flash video of the differences between us and them http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/italy.php If they can, try to avoid the major cities since people tend to be stressed out and not too helpful there. Picking one place to live is very difficult, but a medium sized city or small town in most of the country is an amazing place to be able to call home.
