I would like to move and live in Italy for about 3 months to 6 months, can you help me?
I would like to go to Rome. I have a friend live there, but other than that I do not know. I have never been to Italy before. I am 43 and it just have been my dream to move and live in Italy for cultural experience and learning the language. I am not a student anymore. I came to the USA as a student and now I have a Green Card. I am from Japan originally. Any tip and advice is appreciated it. (I do not speak Italian).

You can visit for up to 90 days as a tourist without requiring a visa. you would just need your passport and an onward or return ticket to leave at the end of that time. There is no visa for tourism for more than 90 days since Japan does not have an agreement in place with Italy for a working holiday (neither does the US). It would be illegal for you to work here for this period, but you can visit your friend and participate in all the tourist activities. You certainly could work on learning the language while you're here visiting too. Visa information for Italy is here: http://www.esteri.it/visti/home_eng.asp In order to actually move here longer term, you would need either a residence visa that allows you to live here without working, a work visa, or an education visa. Information for each of these is on the site above. A work visa is very hard to get as there are few jobs available right now. Note that you would also still need to get a long term residence permit (a permesso di soggiorno) after you arrive. Getting that now requires you to pass an Italian language test - http://www.interno.it/mininterno/export/sites/default/en/sezioni/sala_stampa/notizie/news/09960_Italian_language_test_for_migrants.html
