Yes, as long as you haven't renounced your US citizenship. Note that while you're living in Italy as a US expat, you still need to file income tax returns in the US as well as here.

Sure. Millions of American citizens live in other countries and return any time they want. American citizenship is a wonderful thing to have. Have a great time in Italy.
