Ok, to be more specific.....bella Roma! I'm a young American girl going to be studying in Italy for a year. I can't take allot of stuff with me, so I have to choose what types of clothes I'm going to take and what I'm going to leave behind. I have a variety, so give whatever opinions you have! And if it helps, here's what I look like : I'm 5'10" (yeah, I know...tall!lol), I have long dark hair with a sort of red tint, dark eyes and tan skin with an hourglass shape figure. Thanks for all the answers! Swede....I haven't a clue what the Italians wear. And I'm talking more about the climate there....its different than here, much hotter.

Should what you're wearing matter? As long as you don't look like crap you'll do fine.

When in Italy, wear what the Italians wear...

People in Rome are much dressier than people in the states. What you consider casual wear might be seen as sloppy-American-ware to them. Of course bring jeans and tee shirts, but you may find most young people are wearing slacks and fine shoes. Bring a few classic, well made, comfortable things rather than a lot of more casual clothes. Rome is fantastic - you'll love it there. If you enjoy the Italian food the way most tourists do, none of your clothes will fit after a month or two anyway!

well, when i stayed in italy, i just brought my normal clothes. Make sure you bring some skirts or dresses that go below your knees and are not sleeveless or if they are have some sweater to go over it because there is a dress code for places like the vatican. Nice sandles, when i went no one had flip flops there. they were all leather sandles and kinda dressy incomparision to flip flops. I think italians dress nicer than americans on average. Italian guy also wear tight pants, which i hate. Bring basics. Nice pair of black pants, nice plain tshirts, that way you can mix and match to create several different outfits.

People I know that travel to Italy say they "dress up" a little more there. I suggest look online at the schools website and check italian newspapers.

Is this your first time in Europe? If it is, you'll be shocked. The people honestly do not care about brand names, at all. A lot of places in Europe dress kind of skanky, but Italy is a little more sophisticated. Just bring your regular clothes for day time. For nighttime I would suggest getting ankle boots or cute suede heels (http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=24232&itemType=PRODUCT&iMainCat=121&iSubCat=125&iProductID=24232). Italy is big on boots as well. Definitly bring little cute shawls and shrugs. Honestly, they dress pretty much the same as we do except just a little more streamlined and sophisticated and they don't really buy iinto the whole name brand thing. Stores like H&M and Zara are HUGE over there. As for climate, during the summer it is SCORCHING but I'm guessing you won't be there that long for the summer (Italy school ends in July, yeah?) Anyway, you'll definitly need a winter jacket and sweaters.
