add up what you spend in america and multiply times 5.

I've looked into this, myself and the consensus is that, like in the US, there's a large disparity between cost of living in a big city vs. living in a more rural area. I've heard that Rome is very expensive, but so is New York. Both are "Nice places to visit," but I'd rather live in a smaller town.

is expansive. but i made this for a friend: it depends by the periods... and where do u live!! the flight from NYC cost somethin' like 600€ with alitalia (942$) and calculate the return 1884$, 4 two person=3760$ then u have to calculate the hotels (medium 3 stars in city center of rome 120/240€ (188/376$) a night 4 a double room. 4 two weeks (13 nights) it makes 2444/4888$. i suggest u to move between rome florence and venice by train (it cost less and trains are quick) and it will cost u rome-to-florence-to-venice-to-rome 4 two person cost 392/450$ + food for two a day 40/80€ (62/125$) for 12 days 744/1500$. museums and actractives 80€/125$ flights=3760$ hotels=2444/4888$ others=1261/2075$ total=7465/10723$ it's a tour based on the real min/max prices of the italian transport companies. the change in this scheme is € 1 = 1.40 $ ps the flight now cost up to 2.000€ = 2.800$ with return.

It depends where you want to move. I live in Milano and it can get pretty expensive here, and Roma as well. I don't know how to compare it to america, but it probably is similar to that of your big cities, maybe a manhattan or something like that. not sure. But yes it is definitely more expensive than average so if you have the cash, you'll more than enjoy living here. everyone does :]
