I assume you mean 1200 per month? I live in england but I've been several times to Italy and it's not a cheap place to live, at least in the tourist areas. I may be wrong but that sum might be enough to rent an apartment, but probably not enough to buy food or much else. Maybe you could get a part-time job there to help make ends meet?

I just spent a year living in Naples. Italy. Is 1200 Euro what you are going to spend a month? Being a foreigner you might pay a higher rent then local nationals. We paid 2200 Euro rent for our house, but if it's just you and your wife a small flat will be cheap. We also had to pay road tax for our car. Then there is the garbage tax, but Naples is higher then the rest of Italy (and for good reason). Also, the exchange rate is horrible right now, but things are so expensive, especially in "tourist towns" like Pisa, although there are stores that you can buy food in that are wonderful and inexpensive. God I miss the food. Will you buy a car there or ship one over? The public transportation is wonderful in Italy (all of Europe actually). I miss Europe, it can be done, if you budget well.

Your main concern should be the rent; in Pisa you could find a good apartment for two people starting from 500 or 600 Euro (if you're lucky; it's more likeable you need 700 to 800 Euro); but nearby, in another town in the province, it's easier to find similar apartments for 400 Euro per month.

There are a lot of families, even with children, living in Pisa with 1000/1100 € per month. Your 1200 € are more or less corresponding to the average wage of specialized workers / first years employees and unless you've the pretension to live for istance just aside the Leaning Tower or to often dine at the restaurant I would say they are absolutely sufficient for a couple. I know there are many facilities offered there to University's students and perhaps your fellowship entitles you to take advantage of some discounted rate to rent a flat in a less tourist area. I guess you may apply the University's secretary to get more info. A discounted rate would obviously allow you to live in a more comfortable way but I feel you shouldn't have problems provided you budget carefully.
